Did you know that going on a daily walk has been shown to have numerous benefits. It’s simple, free, and healthy. A Harvard Medical Study even discovered that walking can tame a sweet tooth, boost immune function and reduce cancer risk. Walking is a practical key for positive living. However, there are things that can ruin a pleasant walk, even in beautiful environments. Trying to wander peacefully when there is loud road construction nearby, for example, is a frustrating experience. Equally, a short stroll quickly becomes uncomfortable if you’re carrying something heavy or awkward. Your burden drains the enjoyment of the walk.
As we walk out our spiritual lives with God, the same is true. Journeying with our Creator is healthy and life-giving—the best way to live. Jesus is our good shepherd, lovingly guiding our souls through life’s twists and turns. However, there are times when life’s distractions, burdens and griefs steal the beauty from our spiritual walk. We might be walking through stunning environments, but we can’t see the scenery because we’re so encumbered by the baggage we’re carrying. We feel heavy and disconnected from God. Put simply: a heavy burden can ruin a lovely walk. What burdens are hindering your spiritual walk today? It’s time to let them go. We’re going to allow space for God to deal with your burdens. Then, as your load lifts, we’re going to pray that God reignites your heart’s connection with Him. You’ll see Him clearly again. It might not happen immediately, but today can begin a restorative journey for you.
In 1 Peter 5:6-7, Peter teaches us to walk without any burdens "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." Allow these holy words to resonate. Peter is encouraging you into a holy transfer today. Where worry is pressuring you to carry your concerns alone, scripture prompts us to entrust them to God. He’s your Father. He cares for you. So, as we walk, let’s experience God’s promised freedom.
One of the most powerful scriptures that illustrates this is found in the Message translation of Matthew 11:30 "Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me, and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly." Matthew 11:30 By connecting with Jesus, we have the opportunity to allow these unforced rhythms of grace to shape our walk. We can learn to live and walk freely and lightly. Imagine your worries as heavy rocks. You’re carrying these burdensome stones every step you take. They’re weighing you down. They’re making you want to quit. What do these rocks represent? Start to name them. As you identify your cares, picture yourself handing them, one-by-one, to Jesus. He’s walking right beside you. Feel the weight lift. Instead of your burdens, receive God’s freedom. Instead of your anxieties, receive God’s peace. Exchange your pain, for the joy of the Lord.
To close, let’s commit our day to Jesus together: Dear God, thank you that I can cast my anxiety on you. I don’t have to deal with them alone. You care for me. As I entrust my burdens to your hands, I pray you will reignite my connection with you. I want to know you more. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Now, lift your head. Smile. Jesus is walking with you.
