This weekend, we celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) — a day to celebrate women’s contributions, achievements, and inherent value. From birthdays to graduation parties, celebrations invite us to look at people and say, “This is who you are and you’re worthy of celebrating.” In the Kingdom of God, it’s no different. In fact, it’s what Scripture teaches us to do. So, how can we celebrate International Women's Day as Christians? Let's dive in.
When we look at women, the invitation is to look at them and say “you were crafted in God’s image, you are capable of more than you dreamed of, and I choose to celebrate who God made you to be.” While the world may place limitations and inequality before women, we as Christians have the opportunity to stand in the gap for women like Jesus Christ did in the Bible, and champion them.
If we go back to the start of creation in the Book of Genesis, we can see that both men and women were made in God’s image: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).
When you really think about it, that holds incredible meaning. Each one of us was crafted with such detail and intentionality, all while reflecting the beauty of our Creator. And while both men and women are called to look like God, women have a unique role in that reflection.
When God created Eve, the Bible tells us that “The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him’” (Genesis 2:18). But Eve was more than just a helper. In the original Hebrew language, the words “helper” and “suitable for him” come from “ezer kenegdo,” meaning Eve was a perfect match for Adam. When describing Eve as a helper, God did not make woman an inferior part to man, He made woman to be a strong help and equal counterpart.
As strong counterparts, women are also strong leaders and changemakers. When describing women of faith, Proverbs 31:25-26 says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.” This verse reminds us of the strength and dignity Christian women carry. It describes a woman who faces the future confidently, is grounded in faith, has words full of wisdom, and carries a kindness that earns respect.
All throughout the Bible, we see women who led with courage and grace, and more than anything, kept their eyes on God. Queen Esther led the Jewish people to freedom (Esther 4:14), Mary, the mother of Jesus, was entrusted to carry the King of Kings in her womb and raise Him (Luke 1:26-38), Deborah was a prophet and judge who led Israel through battle (Judges 4 and 5), and the list goes on.

And while the women you love may not be mentioned in the Bible, they are just as loved, seen, and known by God. They have stories and faith that are being celebrated in heaven right now. This is good news.
International Women’s Day is a reminder to celebrate the strength and potential of women everywhere. From Proverbs 31’s call to dignity and wisdom, to the bold examples of women like Esther, Mary, and Deborah, the Bible shows us the powerful impact Christian women have when they lead with courage and faith.
So, may we celebrate and uplift women with honor. Where there is inequality, may we push for equality. Where there is oppression, may we stand for justice. And where there is a lack of godly love and support for women, may we stand for these incredible women with an abundance of honor.
As we celebrate women today and every day, please join us in praying for women with the prayer below and these additional prayers for women.
Dear God,
Today we thank You for all of the women in the world. Thank You for crafting each woman with intention, love, and care. Today we join You in celebrating women, their achievements, and more than anything, the unique way they reflect Your love. We pray that any challenges or barriers women face today would be broken down by the truth of the gospel, knowing that You stand in the gap as their strong defense. May the love of Jesus always be our guide in how we treat, uplift, and celebrate women on this International Women’s Day, and every day beyond.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Happy International Women’s Day!
