How do you use the SOAP Method Bible Study?

Step 1: S - Scripture

Begin by selecting a passage of Scripture that resonates with you or one you feel led to explore. It can be a single verse or a longer passage. Read it slowly and attentively, allowing the words to sink in. We recommend reading and re-reading it several times until you've really let different meanings and perspectives sink in. Each time you read the passage, choose a different keyword to concentrate on. Maybe even do a deep dive on the meaning of the word itself. This kind of slow, meditative study can be really helpful for retention..

Step 2: O - Observation

Once you've read the Scripture, take some time to reflect on what you've read. Pay attention to the details, the context, and any key themes or messages that stand out to you. Consider what the passage is saying about God, His character, and His relationship with humanity. Be curious about what you read. What speaks to you in the passage? Why do you think that word or phrase speaks to you strongly? Does something resonate with you emotionally or remind youn of a memory? How might the Holy Spirit be speaking to you through this passage of scripture? What do you notice?

Step 3: A - Application

Now, it's time to bridge the gap between reading scripture and applying scripture. Ask yourself, "How does this Scripture apply to me today?" Look for practical ways to implement God's message into your daily life. This step is crucial for personal growth and transformation. Maybe you could ask yourself the following questions:

Is there a sin to be avoided?

Ask yourself, "Is the Bible making clear that we should avoid something thats against Gods will?" If so, then you have an opportunity to avoid making that mistake.

Is there a promise to claim?

Many scriptures contain a promise of God towards us. For example. God's promise that He will "never leave you or forsake you" can be applied to everyone of His followers today!

Is there an example to follow?

Is there something within the text that demonstrates an action that we could copy? Whether its helping people sacrificially like the Samaritan, praying for our enemies, or forgiving an offense, following a good biblical example is a great way to see the scripture come alive in our lives.

Is there a command to be obeyed?

For example, Jesus commands us to love our neighbour as ourselves, is a direct and personal command for each of His followers! By applying this command personally and immediately, we'll be honouring God with an obedient lifestyle.

What do I learn about God from this passage?

A great question to ask yourself is: What does this passage teach me about the nature and characteristics of God? What do I learn about Him from this scripture? How will I view Him differently because of what I've read?

Step 4: P - Prayer

After you've gained insights from the Scripture and considered how it applies to your life, take some time to pray. Share your thoughts, emotions, and desires with God. Thank Him for His Word and ask Him for guidance and strength to live out what you've learned. Surrender your heart and life to Him, allowing Him to work in and through you.
