Does anyone else think âeasier said than doneâ after reading the famous âbe anxious for nothingâ scripture?
Come with us and we unpack this famous verse and find its fresh, practical wisdom for today.
This verse, found in Philippians 4: 6-7 says:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.â
This verse is so compelling, partly because is lays out a clear formula. It says, in essence, stop worrying, do this by praying, and then youâll experience the most amazing peace from God.
For those of us who struggle with anxiety or worry this verse can be incredibly reassuring. It describes the Biblical model for living free from fear and liberated from anxiety.
Philippians is one of the books in the New Testament. Originally it was a letter, written by Paul, to his friends in a church in the city of Philippi.
The be anxious for nothing scripture is found in chapter 4, verses 6-7 but itâs worth reading through the whole book to get a real feel for what Paul is saying.
When you read through Philippians you realise Paul is emphasising the importance of prayer, and trusting God, in living life to the full.
In the verses before chapter 4: 6-7 the Apostle Paul encourages the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord, to be gentle with one another, and to cast their cares on God through prayer. Itâs here that he then goes on to say, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6).
The context suggests that the Philippians were facing various challenges and hardships, including persecution and opposition from outside sources. In light of these difficulties, Paul reminds them not to be anxious or worried, but instead to turn to God in prayer, trusting that He will provide for their needs and give them peace.
Moreover, Paul assures them that if they follow this approach, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This verse emphasizes the importance of faith and trust in God, even in the midst of trials and difficulties.
Paul isnât alone in encouraging us not to worry but to instead trust God with everything. In Matthew 6: 25-26 we read that Jesus taught his disciples not to worry about their needs, but to instead rely on God for everything they need. It says:
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
This verse highlights the importance of trusting in God and relying on Him to take care of our every need. While the Bible acknowledges that worrying happens, it also reminds us that we can overcome this by placing our trust in God.
The Bible teaches us that worry is a distraction from the goodness and sovereignty of God and can lead us away from our connection with Him.
Instead of worrying we are encouraged to focus on God, pray to Him, and seek His guidance and comfort in our time of need.
As we trust in Him, we can experience the peace that surpasses all understanding and guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
So, let us take comfort in these words and remember to put our trust in God, for He will never forsake us.
First things first, letâs do away with the lie that your worries and anxieties are too big for God, or that your feelings are too much for Him. God can handle anything and everything you throw at Him.
Itâs easy to disconnect from the humanity in the people writing the scriptures but, remember, Paul was in prison when he wrote Philippians. When he so passionately tells us not to worry, he is alone and his life in danger. He knew how hard life can get and yet remained convinced that we can live our days free from the burden of anxiety.
One practical way you can begin to apply the be anxious for nothing scripture to your life is to start bringing everything to the table when you pray. Donât hold back!
The more we trust God with our fears, worries, questions and even just our mundane thoughts the more He can release His peace and His solutions to us.
Here are four, simple, practical, ways to start handing over your worries and anxieties to God.
Use a gratitude journal: Every morning use a journal and turn your worries into gratitude by listing three things youâre thankful for. As the days go on your gratitude journal will serve as an inspiring reminder of all the good things in your life.
Send a prayer request: When you find an anxious thought hard to shift, or your body is really feeling the effects of worry, send a prayer request to those in your community. You donât have to go into detail, just ask for prayer to help you catch hold of Godâs peace again.
