To help you prepare for a good night’s sleep, here are a selection of prayers for you to read through in your own time. Each prayer for peaceful sleep has been written to guide you as you ask God for a restful sleep this evening.
It can often be helpful to pray before you sleep. Prayer helps to regulate your breathing, to calm any anxieties and concerns, and to bring peace to your soul. Through prayer you can come before God as you end the day and prepare to sleep.
A sleep prayer: Matthew 7:7
As I arrive at the end of my day, I come before You now and I take a moment to be still in Your presence. Thank You for today. Thank You for the joy, love and opportunities that You brought my way. I bring to mind my regrets and mistakes and I lay them at Your feet.
I thank You, God, that You are here with me right now. As I prepare to sleep, I invite Your presence to surround me in this moment. Would you embrace me with Your love, remind me of Your nearness, and draw me ever closer into Your presence.
I rest tonight in the words of Your son Jesus in Matthew 7:7, where He says “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” I rest in this promise of Your generosity and faithfulness.
God, tonight I ask that You would grant me a peaceful sleep. Remind me of your promise of protection. I trust that You are my defender and shield. I trust that You hold me in Your hands, both when I am awake and when I sleep.
Thank You, God, that You are a good, faithful and generous God. I receive the gift of Your Holy Spirit once again and I rest in Your presence and care.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
A sleep prayer: Psalm 3:5
I come to You now as Your child, at the end of my day. I bring to You all the highs and lows of the day that has passed and I lay it all at Your feet. As I conclude the day, I surrender once again to You and I offer myself to You afresh.
I thank You for all that You have done in and through me today. You are working in me and I am grateful for your gracious hand that guides me in all I do. Thank You that you care about my relationships; help me carry Your grace towards me in all I do for others. I am so aware that I am part of Your family; thank You for working in the lives of those around me and the encouragement this is to me. I recognise the blessing of Your hand at work in my life.
In this prayer for peaceful sleep, I rest in the promise of Psalm 3:5, where your Word says, “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.” I declare this verse over my life now. It is You who sustains me, both in my waking and in my sleeping. As I lie down to sleep this evening, I do so in Your strength and in Your presence. And when I wake tomorrow, I do so by Your grace and through Your Spirit.
God, I thank You that You are a faithful God. You promise to always sustain me, in seasons of peace and seasons of trial. As I prepare to sleep this evening, I pray that You would grant me a night’s sleep that is full of peace and true rest. Would you comfort me with Your presence and hold me in Your loving embrace.
I rest afresh in Your eternal presence and I surrender this night ahead to You. Thank You for Your love, Your protection and Your care.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
A sleep prayer: Matthew 11:28
As I reflect on the day gone before me, I choose to end my day in gratitude and reflection. I thank You for walking with me through the events of today and I reflect on Your great kindness and faithfulness towards me.
As I prepare to sleep this evening, I rest in the words of Jesus in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” I receive this promise today and I declare Jesus’ words over my life. I trust that as I come to You now, God, weary and burdened, that You will grant me true rest.
Right now, I come to You once again and I offer up my whole self to You. I bring to You all the burdens of life and I lay them at Your feet. And I receive the true and ongoing rest that Jesus promises. I receive the fruit of the Spirit once again and ask for a peaceful sleep this evening.
As I sleep, would you draw me ever closer to You and would you protect me from all harm and discomfort. May You grant me a sleep that leads me to a place of refreshment in the morning. And may I know with confidence that you are watching over me and holding me in Your hand of protection and care.
God, I thank You for the promises of rest that I find in Scripture. I trust in Your promises this evening and give my whole being over to You once again.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
