Today, pause and look back at Ephesians, and as you read the words of Paul the apostle, ask yourself, "What is God saying to me today?" And we’re reading from the book of Ephesians as we “hit pause” and look back across the Bible to some significant characters. Ephesians is one of the Apostle Paul’s most famous letters. In it, he reminds its readers of the truth of the gospel and our secure identity in Jesus Christ. Consequently, its full of incredible theology and is one of the best books to head to if you're feeling overwhelmed or insignificant. In chapter two, he writes: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves; it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8–10
Take a moment to breathe deeply. Consciously release any tension that has built up in your body. Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. This is your time to slow down and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul as you turn your attention to the presence of God. What do you think He’s saying to you today? Our last few blog posts have been all about searching the Bible for examples of people who went through some form of identity crisis. We’ve watched closely to see how God dealt with, and cared for these people. It’s been a beautiful and reassuring process. With Hagar, God took the time to see her in her struggles. He picked her up and gave her hope for her future. With Jacob, God wrestled with him through his confusion and gave him a new name. He helped Jacob move from a deceitful past into a fruitful future. And, with Gomer, God redeemed her from a life of shame by faithfully pursuing her even when she did not deserve it. She was bought back from slavery and reinstated as a loved member of the family. With Gideon, God looked beyond the insecure person that he was and spoke to him as the warrior he could be. He led Gideon into a future that Gideon couldn’t see for himself, and walked with him every step of the way. And with Peter, God restored him, even though he had failed terribly and denied Christ. Not only did God forgive Peter, but He also commissioned him to live a meaningful life of impact; building Jesus’ church. It’s a powerful, encouraging and hope-filled collection of true stories. And today is a good time to make them personal to you.
Take some quiet space to reflect on everything you’ve heard. Who do you relate to most from this list of Bible characters? What’s one thing you’ve learned about God’s response to us when we go through crises in our identity? Our passage today beautifully sums up the identity-defining and identity-restoring God we serve. In fact, within two verses, we are reminded that God is the one who has created us and given us a purpose. If we ever need a reminder, all we need to do is look to Him. Hopefully, this is the revelation you are coming to as you continue this “identity” journey with us. We’ve encountered the same pattern time and time again: God is the source of your identity, and the only one who can define, renew, or restore it. So, go to Him today. Find some time to rest and simply connect with your loving Heavenly Father. Let Him refresh and renew you today Let’s pray together. Loving Father,Thank you for this time together. This weekend, I anchor my heart and soul in you. You are my safe space. I am secure in your love. Give me the strength to live boldly today as the person you’ve made me to be. Guide my steps, lead me in truth and let me shine brightly, reflecting your grace to those around me.In Jesus’ name. Amen.
