Increasing Pressure

Our children are under increasing pressure, and as I've blogged previously, anxiety in teens has never been higher. The world has all sorts of different pressures pulling our children in different ways: popularity, comparison, career, talent, fame, wealth, and unless we know who we are in Jesus, then how will we stand under the pressure? If we don't know who we are, then we look for people around us to tell us. If we don't know our worth then we will look for someone to tell us. But something I find amazing is that when Jesus walked the earth and taught in parables, He was teaching us to live, and His message was timeless. He has the words of life, and communicating the grace-filled and awesome message of the gospel to our children is an honor and a privilege. So how can we communicate this message to our children in a way that resonates with them? The Bible tells us that we should: "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6 But how do we know the way they should go? We can prayerfully spend time with them and bring them to God. As parents, we can encourage them and build them up. We can give them opportunities to learn in a safe place.

Set An Example

Children learn by copying, so the best way to teach your kids to live is to set an example. Want your kids to enjoy reading? Then read yourself. Likewise, the best way to teach your children the ways of God is to live your life with God and share it with your children. Share the times when amazing things have happened, the moments when your prayers have been answered, but share the things you struggle with too. They will learn from your life. As parents, we may not know everything, and we may not have always made the best decisions in life, but we do have the benefit of experience. We can remember the times when things went well and not so well. We can remember what we did in hard times and how we managed to get through. One of my children struggles with anxiety, and when he does, we find a Bible verse to repeat before he sleeps. He has also begun to keep a journal of what he is feeling anxious about. It is by responding with the eyes of faith at times of worry or stress that our children will begin to learn that there is another way and that the way of the world is not the only one. Keep reading for some Bible verses about learning to share with your children. But first, here are some wonderful promises to remember.

Biblical Promises To Remember

"I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14 "I have loved you with an everlasting love." Jeremiah 31:3 "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil for You are with me." Psalm 23:4 "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8 "I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31 "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deuteronomy 31:8

Creative Ways To Share Bible Verses With Your Children

  1. Have a jar by the front door and fill it with Bible verses that are special to you. You could include some of the verses above. When you are leaving, ask your children to pull one out, to remind them of who they are before they leave for the day.
  2. Listen to the Glorify App on your commute to school or over breakfast together. It has short devotionals that will help you to breathe just five minutes of a different kind of air. It will remind your children that they are named from heaven and are not of this world.
  3. Try to memorize one or more of these verses with your children. As corny as it sounds, it actually works. If we have remembered, we can call it to mind when we need it.

The Book of Psalms says, "I have hidden your word in my heart" (Psa. 119:11) and later on in the same Psalm, "I will walk about in freedom for I have sought out your precepts." (Psa. 119:45) You see, God's law isn't restricting, rather it gives us the freedom to walk about without anxiety, loneliness or fear.
