Sometimes anxiety comes on quickly, or just for a short spell. Other times people spend months or even years in a state of near constant anxiety. It’s not just a mental condition either. Anxiety takes a toll on our whole bodies. It can make you breathless, leave your chest feeling tight, it can impact how you sleep and your hormones. It truly is an invasive and difficult thing to live with. Sadly, it’s incredibly common. It’s so overwhelming that it can leave us feeling helpless and devoid of hope. Fortunately the Bible brings comfort, strength and freedom. When you connect with a Biblical worldview of the past, the present and the future you find a golden thread of peace to follow, leading you away from anxious thoughts.
Alongside grasping the whole narrative of the Bible and what it means for you, it’s helpful to have a few, short, verses to hand. You can use these to help combat a flare up of anxious thoughts. Read through these verses and take note of the ones that resonate with you. Philippians 4:6-7: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This verse reminds us to turn our worries over to God through prayer. We know that as we trust God, handing over our burdens and cares, He in turn releases His incredible peace to us. Psalm 94:19: "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy." God is our comforter. He invites us to leave anxiety behind and instead live with His joy defining every one of our days. Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." God is always with us, always. He strengthens and helps us. Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." This verse is a strong encouragement to live in the present. When we trust God as our provider we can relinquish any and all of our fears about the future. 1 Peter 5:7: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." God doesn’t want any of us to suffer from anxiety. His heart is for everyone to live free from fear, fully reliant on Him and His goodness.
Along with the above Bible verses for anxiety, remember to focus on Jesus' promise of peace. John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."Jesus is called the Prince of Peace. In John He says He has given us His peace. But, that means so much more than just him releasing peace to us. Jesus is reminding us that He is peace and that when He is present, peace is present. Building an intimate relationship with Jesus is an effective way to lessen your anxiety. The more you learn to talk to Jesus throughout the day and to invite Him into your decision making, the more you'll experience the incredible presence of His peace.
