Bible Verses for Mothers

A verse we’ve read a million times before can suddenly impact us profoundly. Or, we can connect with a character in the Bible deeply.

Motherhood brings a specific set of challenges. It’s an incredible blessing to be a mum but it can also be the hardest thing in the world.

There are Bible verses for mothers to help guide your parenting, to give you strength on difficult days and to connect you to God again.

As you read them ask the Holy Spirit to underline the ones meant for you in this season.

What Are Some Of The Most Meaningful Bible Verses For Mothers?

As a mother, it can be overwhelming to navigate the challenges of raising children. But the Bible is a great source of comfort and wisdom for us. Here are some of the most meaningful Bible verses for mothers:

Proverbs 31:28

"Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

Thisverse paints a beautiful picture of family life as God intended it. Everyone has their role in the family of God and, while motherhood can often just feel like thankless service, this proverb reminds us that we serve for a purpose. As we care for, nourish and invest in our children and husbands we are stepping into a cohesive, complementary partnership. Family was made to nurture mums too!

Psalm 127:3

"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”

On the hard days this short verse is a great reminder of what a blessing having children is. Children give us the incredible opportunity to continue building God’s family here on earth. What a privilege!

Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-8

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

The early years of motherhood can feel like such a whirlwind. Amongst the busyness and exhaustion these two verses places an emphasis on our responsibility to raise our kids with their future and, importantly, their eternal future, in mind. Mums and Dads, we are called to educate and disciple our children, not to delegate the responsibility. This can feel like an enormous, impossible task but thankfully Bible verses like this remind us that God is with us and will give us everything we need to raise our children well.

What Are Some Of The Most Powerful Scriptural Passages About Mothers?

The Bible is filled with stories of incredible, inspiring women. Not only are there amazing models for motherhood, there’s also moving examples of women enduring hardship and heartbreak.

When you’re looking for Bible verses for mothers, a great place to start is some of the incredible stories told about women in the Bible.

Here are some of the lesser known female figures in the Bible, let their stories encourage you today.

Jochebed

We don’t get to hear much about Moses’ mother, Jochebed. But, what we do know is pretty amazing.

She gave birth to Moses while her people suffered under an oppressive, dangerous regime. To ensure her son’s survival she bravely hid him for three months (what skill that must have taken, to hide a loud, newborn baby). When she couldn’t keep him hidden any longer she put all her trust in God and put her precious son into a basket and sent him floating down the Nile river.

We all know how the story continues, that precious baby grows up to save a nation.

Moses’ story, of a boy who grows up to save a people, is mirrored by Jesus himself years later.

How incredible that one mother’s bravery and breathtaking trust in God meant the survival of God’s people.

Lois And Eunice

You’d be forgiven for not even realising there are women called Lois and Eunice in the Bible. One verse in Timothy refers to these two women and shows us how amazing they must have been.

Paul writes in 2 Timothy 1: 3-5

"...I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

Timothy grew up to be a foundational part of the early church and the spreading of the good news around the world. Here we learn that Paul credits Timothy’s amazing faith with his upbringing, specifically, his mum and grandmother. How many mums need this timely reminder that everything they do has a lasting impact. Every time a mum plucks up the energy to pray with her child, or works hard to teach her kids about who Jesus is, she is playing an incredible part in the most amazing of legacies.

Are There Any Bible Verses That Can Be Used To Encourage Mothers?

Motherhood can be incredibly difficult. From the broken sleep and overwhelming task of looking after a baby, to the strain of the mental load and huge identity crisis it can trigger. Mums have a lot on their plates!

Staying connected to God on even the toughest days as a mum can provide endless strength, comfort and wisdom when you need it most.

Focus on Bible verses for mothers that remind you of God’s incredible love for you and how He is with you through everything.

Psalm 46: 1-3 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.”

Psalm 37: 3-4 “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Philippians 4: 6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What Is The Biblical Basis For Honoring Mothers?

One of the Ten Commandments ‘honor your father and mother’ makes is pretty clear that we are meant to respect and appreciate our parents.

Throughout his ministry Jesus made sure to include and honour women, a highly counter-cultural and controversial move.

There are also multiple stories of God blessing and working through women and mothers in the Bible. Think of Esther, saving a whole nation through bravely facing the King. Or Ruth’s loyalty to her mother-in-law.

The Bible is filled with inspiring stories of how women put themselves on the line to save others. It is our privilege and joy to honour the mothers in our life.

What Does The Bible Say About The Role Of Mothers In The Family?

There are lots of Bible verses that speak to the importance of mothers and the impact they have on their families.

One of the most well-known passages is found in Proverbs 31:26-27, which says, "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

Being a mum can be incredibly tough sometimes and this famous can sometimes feel like the most impossible thing. When you’re struggling not to snap at your kids, having wisdom and kindness on your tongue can feel a world away.

The important thing to remember is that we were never meant to parent without God. God loves family, He created it, and He works out His purpose through family time and time again. And yours is no different!

So, when you feel like you can’t do it alone or you’re at the end of your patience, remember, God has all you need to be the most gracious, compassionate mum, possible. You just need Him!
