5 Inspiring Bible Verses About Mental Health

5 Inspiring Bible Verses About Mental Health

God is invested in every single part of you and your life. From your joys and passions to your fears, worries and health. We hope you'll find encouragement in the following five inspiring Bible Verses about mental health.

There are many Bible verses that address mental health and lots of wisdom to be drawn from Scripture because He is a God who cares about our wellbeing.

Don’t ever think that your mental health and your faith have to be separate parts of your life. One of the consistent themes of the Bible, from Genesis through to Revelation, is that God doesn’t expect us to be strong or perfect without Him. He created us to do life with Him. We are designed to rely on His strength, on His grace and on His provision. Any thought that you’re just not strong enough or tough enough is nonsense; you were made to rest and rely on a supernatural God. That is not a weakness.

5 Inspiring Bible Verses About Mental Health

1. God Has Chosen You

I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you, I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:9-10.

Here, God promises “I am with you” and reminds us that we are chosen. Whether it feels like it or not, we can trust in the truth that the God who created the universe chose us.

In these two verses alone we learn that God will strengthen us, uphold us and that He calls us.

He Has Good Things Planned For You

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted passages of Scripture and for good reason. On the days we feel lost, anxious and out of control, it is a powerful reminder that we can trust our future to God. No matter how unknown and uncertain it feels.

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ Jeremiah 29:11

Christian author Brittany Moses says this: “When you cannot see the future and not knowing the outcome gives you anxiety, focus on the One who has gone before you. He knows the plans He has for you.”

3. God Is Always With You

These next couple of Bible verses about mental health serve as a brilliant reminder of two things. Firstly, that God is always with us. Secondly, that even when a circumstance feels like it will overwhelm or consume us, God promises us that it will not.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire; you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Isaiah 43: 2-3

4. God Created You And He Didn’t Make A Mistake

For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are Your thoughts,God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand — when I awake, I am still with You. Psalm 139:13-18

Quoting this Psalm can be the best strategy on days you find your mental health really challenged. There is a liberating truth here that we all need reminding of, that is, we were made deliberately and with incredible care by God. We are not accidents, He didn’t make a mistake or mess up. He created you and everything He creates is wonderful.

5. He Will Help You Rest

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ Matthew 11: 28-29

During the days and weeks when all we want is rest and to switch off, this verse in Matthew can bring real comfort.

God promises us His rest and invites us to take His ‘yoke’ upon us. Here is a compelling invitation to live the way Jesus did and, in doing so, experience the sweetness of resting with God.

God knows how exhausting life can be. Jesus was both fully God and fully man, He knows what being utterly exhausted feels like. Don’t worry that your feelings of tiredness will overwhelm you and make you weak or beyond God’s reach. He knows how you feel and He is offering you rest for your soul.

An Encouragement For Difficult Days

Author C.S. Lewis addressed the subject of mental health throughout many of his books. He shared this important reminder:

Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say ‘My tooth is aching’ than to say ‘My heart is broken.’

Finding someone who you feel safe with to share your mental pain is a vulnerable, difficult thing to do but can be the first step in lessening the burden. And, remember, God always offers Himself to us as a safe place and refuge.
