12 Bible Verses About Freedom

3 min read

Did you know there are many Bible verses about freedom? Find out why this subject is so important and how you can live a life of freedom too!

Stand Firm In Freedom

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17

The freedom that Christ offers us is, well, free! In financial terms, it costs us nothing. It is a supernatural gift that is for anyone who wants to receive it. And, at the same time, it is ours to manage and be responsible for.

Bible Verses About Freedom: The Good News

“Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.” 1 Peter 2:16

“The Spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” Isaiah 61:1

Jesus has bought our spiritual freedom by His death and resurrection. He gives it away freely to those who ask. These truths are foundational to the Christian faith. There is, however, much more to it than a simple transactional exchange.

This spiritual freedom comes with a responsibility. Isaiah invites us to tell other people about good news and set people free. We are to stand up for the oppressed and marginalised. Our spiritual freedom has an expectation that we will love to show and tell others the freedom that we’ve found so that they can experience it too.

Called To Live Free

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”  Galatians 5:13

“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” Romans 6:22

In the war for our affections, it is possible to slip back into some of our old unhealthy ways. As followers of Jesus, we are invited everyday to walk in the freedom of the Spirit and resist the temptations around us. The great news is that the same Spirit that calls us into a life of freedom also gives us the power to live in that freedom.

We’re not on this journey alone. We have divine help!

Freedom and The Son

“Because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”  Romans 8:2

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36

How does Jesus help us live in freedom? God gave the law to His people in order to guide them in living in a way that loves both God and neighbour. Jesus came to fulfil that law and now calls us to follow Him into a life of freedom. So, when we follow Jesus, we are living in freedom.

Bible Verses About Freedom and Truth

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13

The Bible contains God’s eternally true message. When we wander off course, the Bible and His Holy Spirit will guide us back to Him. If we don’t know which way to turn or which decision to make, the Bible gives us promises, principles, and ethics to make good ones. When we don’t fully understand what we’re reading, the Holy Spirit will help us understand the truth.

God’s freedom and truth go hand in hand. One will always lead us to the other.

Freedom and The Holy Spirit

“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” James 1:25

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” – 2 Corinthians 3:17
